Dorval in Canada...
Dorval is a city in southwestern Quebec, in the southwestern part of the Island of Montreal, Canada. Founded in 1667, Dorval is one of the oldest cities in Canada and North America. Over 11 million visitors arrive at Dorval Airport (YUL), officially known as Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, every year, many of which are tourist.
The Sulpician priests were the first people to establish roots in this part of Canada, on the outskirts of Ville-Marie, which later became known as Montreal. Originally Dorval was called Gentilly, then La Présentation-de-la-Vierge-Marie before it was finally renamed Dorval. Dorval has grown rapidly in a short space of time, it was incorporated as a village in 1892, a town in 1903 and gained a city status in 1956.
The Island of Montreal was connected to other settlements via the Grand Trunk Railway in 1855, and it attracted many wealthy families, but the number of inhabitants soon grew with the advent of World War II, when many middle-class families migrated to Dorval from the nearby city of Montreal, as well as other parts of Canada. More people meant more houses, more houses meant more businesses, and so a city was soon born. The world famous Dorval Gardens shopping centre was opened in 1956, one of Greater Montreal’s first mall-style shopping arcades. Even today, Dorval remains the main shopping centre of the area.
There are plenty of recreational activities to be found whilst staying in Dorval, many of which are sports orientated. One can stay in Dorval for a weekend city break, or take the time to explore the area by staying for a week or more.
